: : Regarding the Rohan/A-Saxon argument - you may find that some : : of your arguments (re Parma Endorion) have been somewhat : : undermined by recent archaeology. Finds of helmets with mail : : neck defenses, at York and a more recent one in the Midlands, : : have suggested that defensive armour was probably in more : : common use in the A-Saxon period than was traditionally : : believed. Interestingly the latest helmet - with a nasal and : : hinged cheek guards - possessed a boar shaped crest identical : : to descriptions in Beowulf. : : : : Even more germane, is the discovery of a pagan A-Saxon warrior : : burial complete with the remains of a horse - sacrificed and : : interred with its master. This and other evidence is showing : : that the A-Saxon warrior's equestrian abilities have probably : : been rather underestimated.

: This is interesting. I don't subscribe to any of the archaeological magazines/journals, so I've undoubtedly missed opportunities to read about these finds in current literature. Do you know of any books documenting the finds which might now be available in the US?

By coincidence, the BBC posted this today: http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/newsid_250000/250467.stm
