Whne is everyone going to accept that Tom is an inconsequential character, a blip, an irrelevancy, a diversion. He adds nothing to further the story, his vocals are incoherent (most of the time) and he's absence from the story would certainly have improved things. And yet he has power....power that almost everyone seems attracted to. And that power, I suspect is what makes him so attractive for people to latch on to. And to try and explain him away (even when Tolkien is unwilling to do so) fans of Bombadil try to invent a unique status for him outside ANYTHING that Tolkien himself defined. Why is that? Because fans of Bombadil, without anywhere else to go, try to give Tolkien their stamp of approval by telling everyone else what Tom is! And when there is already an established order that Tom fits in to, totally, wholly and without any need to bastardise his origins. That of the Ainur. And since Tolkien quite clearly states that none of the Valar left Valinor after the War of the Wrath (whenever, certainly none dwelt in ME during the Third Age), the only group within the Ainur Tom fits into is the Maiar. You know. I don't suppose Tom would be such a paragon of irrelevancy if he was not discussed so much and people didn't try to justify his existance and origins to suit their own needs, imagination and beliefs rather than those of Tolkien and Middle-earth.
