Having read this thread with interest (anything concerning warfare interests me) and being both part of the Danish defence, history student (specialising in warfare and the age from around the, alleged, birth of christ till ~1450 in Europe/scandinavia), and a viking warrior (my knee injury has just healed sufficiently to allow me to start training again) I would like to add the comment that under the right circumstances one single, above average warrior can take out a dragon- however, it would have to be in the right terrain and employing the right weapons. Compare to a tank, a very powerful machine of war, it can be taken out by a single man with a hollow charge if he has the nerve t stalk it or wait in hiding until it gets close enough for him to apply his mine. Even an apache can be taken out- by powerlines or telephone cables!- dragon protection; hide under wires. In our myths, Sigurd Fafnersbane dug a trench to hide in and lead the venomous blood away from him- see the likeness to Turin and Glaurung? there are many more similarities, but both were tragic mannish heroes of grand proportions.
