: : John 1v1, is this just a mistake, or another translation. : : : I have, as yet, only been able to give Michael's essay on magic in Tolkien's works a quick scan, but I was impressed. One thing which stood out for me is the theme of the power of song which pervades Tolkien. It is so pervasive that a paraphrase of the opening of St. John's Gospel comes to mind - "In the beginning was the Song, and the Song was with God , and the Song was God." Forget the English translation, in old Greek (yes, this is the löanguage of the John) it says LOGOS, and the LOGOS was with god, and god was the LOGOS. Now unfortunately there is no notion of SONG in the meaning of LOGOS. You have to see it in its gnostic meaning. The idea of the creation by the WORd in our sense is rather hebreaic, and pinnacles in the idea of the ten Sefiroth (read Eco´s "Focault´s pendulum" for more on the ten Sefiroth). Nevertheless, the idea of songs being the magic of ME is not wrong, The idea I see is that songs create and alternate reality. Also, you can disturb or enforce the harmony of things by music (Melkor destroyed the harmony). So when Bombadil sings he restores the harmony Old Man Willow has violated... That´s my three cents.
