I note your response in a previous posting about the inadequacy of short bows, but that is still supposing application in massed-battle. I didn't think that was what rangers were about. I should also note what many people often overlook, namely the role of 'mounted infantry' (such as Harold Godwinsson's huscarls in 1066. They could use horses to deploy rapidly over great distances and carry a lot of provisions and wargear but did not ride them into battle. As I remember it Halbarad and his troop are only described coming to war on their mounts, rather than necessarily fighting from horseback.
