: : Yes, I think most people had noticed. I suspect Lucas borrowed from either Tolkien or the OT (perhaps unwittingly). Tolkien did not borrow from the OT (he discusses it somewhere). The brief entry in the New Bible Dictionary reads: : : : : ENDOR. Modern En-dur, 6km south of Mt. Tabor. The town : : was assigned to [the tribe of] Mannasseh, but was never : : wrested from Canaanite possession. (Josh 17:11-12). : : The medium of Endor, of whom Saul enquired before his last : : battle (1 Sam 28:7), was probably of this Canaanite stock, : : for an attempt had been made to do away with such practices : : among the Hebrews (1 Sam 28:3). : : : Thanx, Stephen. I've been wondering about that for a looooong time. : --Niniel There is a reference in one of Tolkien's letters to the "Biblical echoes" in his work - he refers to Endor, to Erech (compare Genesis 10)and to (the land of) Moriah (compare Genesis 22). But these are - if I remember rightly - echoes, and nothing more. I think he also referred to the city of Uruk (compare "Uruk-hai") He was very emphatic that Moria was called Moria for linguistic reasons, and had nothing in common with Moriah except for the surface likeness of spelling (they are not pronounced the same way - MORia is not MorIAh.) Hope that helps
