The White CouncilGildor InglorionTolkien and Inklings Discussion |
|
Posted by Frederic on June 23, 1999 at 11:33:34 Bonjour a tous, I found a very good discussion on a French forum about Gildor Inglorion's origins : In the SdA: - he presents himself as "of the house of Finrod", - "Inglorion" is "son of Inglor" and it seems that Inglor is an early name for Finrod, so he would be the very son of Finrod ?? This is debatable since in the Silmarillion, a conversation is cited between Finrod and Galadriel in Nargothrond, about the very fact that Finrod had no child (foreseeing of his role aside Beren, memory of AMarie of the Vanyar who would not follow him in Exile). But then we learn from the PoME (the Shibolleth of Feanor) that even in very late writings there remained the question of Finrod's possible descent. What does this lead to? One of those little contradictions between early and late writings, and one of the rare that subsist between published material (since those were eagerly chased, and even if the Shiboleth was not published in Tolkien's time...). Then some questions still remain : how could SdA state "Gildor Inglorion of the house of Finrod" (fake quote), since Finrod supplanted Inglor ? What about this great-grandson of Finwe who suddenly shows up ? Should he not have had a much greater role at least from the Second Age on ? Would he not be the same rank as Gil-Galad (though there is much to say about Gil-Galad's own lineage, quite puzzling !) Hope this bring fun :) Frederic |
