: : : These include: Gildor was a relative by marriage (related to : : : Edhellos, Earwen, Finrod's wife or Orodreth's wife); Gildor : : : was unrelated or distantly related to Finrod, though he had : : : been fostered or adopted by Finrod; Gildor was unrelated to : : : Finrod but had been a retainer or courtier of Finrod and was : : : merely claiming to be "Of the House[hold]" of Finrod.

: : This last idea seems the most likely to me IMHO, as it best : : explains Gildor's apparent status in ME.

: I hesitate to dredge this up and I'll be leaving town for a few days on Monday and don't want to start something I cannot finish in a timely manner.

: However, Tolkien usually says "of the household of..." rather than "of the house of..." to indicate a member of an Elven lord's household. I cannot think of any passage where he would use the phrasing suggested by Martin (and Martin is by no means alone in pointing this out).

: The idiom is appropriate, but does not appear in any of Tolkien's writings so far as I know. I would certainly be interested to see a citation I could check.

This is obviously a grey area where Tolkien did not cross-check his reference. Therefore all reasonable theories which attempt to logically explain the statement have a certain validity.

One argument in favour of the "Household" theory is the possession of one son hardly constitutes a royal house. Any "House" referred to in this sense by a Noldor prince would surely be of Finwe or one of the early branch points, not of a single king who left little political or familial posterity.
