He was first approached by Forest Ackerman (supposedly the world's most famous SF fan, and a Hollywood something-or-other) and some other people in the late 1950s. That eventually led to a deal of some sort where someone named Zimmerman wrote a screenplay in the 1960s which Tolkien absolutely hated. : He eventually decided he would either go for Art or Cash -- meaning he would either accept only a film that was strictly faithful to the book or else he would just accept a lot of money and have nothing more to do with it. Well, he got the Cash, rather than the Art. : Somehow, somewhere in all that, Saul Zaentz purchased the film (and television) rights and he has controlled them, various trademarks, and all associated merchandising rights ever since. Yes, I know about the Zimmerman-Ackerman affair (mentioned in the BIOGRAPHY and LETTERS) and "Cash or Kudos". However, were the rights sold to Zaentz before or after Tolkien's death?
