"Sauron" was not his original name, that is nowhere recorded. The word "sauron" is Quenya meaning "abomination." David Salo (one of the Grand Masters on the TolkLang list) suggested a loose but accurate translation of "sauron" would be "stinker". Sauron did not use the name himself, it was given to him by the Eldar. He had other names. In Adûnaic the Númenóreans called him Zigûr ("the Wizard"), his servants probably just called him "Master" or "Lord." Why did the Mouth use "Sauron"? Probably because, as an ambassador, he had to use words his interlocutors would understand. : >>I seem to remember this being discussed not too long ago. Try the archives. Personally, I think it was a glitch from JRRT's honoured hand, but Cuiven's explanation sounds good enough to me; mention of his name would be "blasphemy" by Orks. However the post made me think of the inscription of The One, is it not in Elvish runes? I think Mithrandir even says that it is Fëanorean script. Another glitch? if so a worse one as The One is what the entir story centers on. : ;-) Neithan I don't see the problem. The Ring Inscription is in the Black Speech language written in the Tengwar script. Feanor invented the Tengwar originally, although others added to it over time. "Feanorian script" is quite accurate. The inscription is not written in Runes.
