Posted by asfaloth on August 08, 1999 at 23:40:33 A previous poster referred to his concern with the various "differences" between Tolkien's work and the two-film script Moriarity has reviewed. I noticed each of those "differences" too. Yet I saw each as clever and workable choices. For those of you who get worried or "nitpicky" I ask that you keep an open mind. I have tried myself for seven years to adapt a "faithful" version of the book to the screen. My idea was a 12-part BBC-like-quality TV version. I've stopped now but believe me, it is impossible to do so without considerable cutting, changing and re-arranging (unless you don't care what you end up with). If you want to look forward to seeing the film it's best to accept that characters and events are going to be modified, condensed and sometimes switched. The review bears out the things I think are important in adapting this beloved book: to tell the story, to voice its themes and give a glimpse into the unique history Tolkien created for Middle Earth. IMO Jackson seems treated each of these with great respect. |
