Could you be more specific as to what you mean here? In the actual essay, Tolkien does not specify either. I assumed that he meant 50 sun years, since many sentences (such as: "For at the end of the third year mortal children began to outstrip the Elves" ) seem to be talking about the same type of year for humans and elves. Or are you suggesting that Tolkien was speaking in terms of tree years for the elves? - which would assume that after 30 (approx) sun years, an elf would still look like a 3 year old man? I agree that the elves of Middle Earth, especially the exiled Noldor, were not average elves. I suppose the matter of elven growth and age still confuses me at this point. ...........
