: Secondly, Saruman was deemed to be the wisest and greatest of the Istari before the downfall and eventual uprising of Mithrandir. How, then, is Saruman so easily turned to evil by Sauron through the Orthanc-Stone? This is pretty classic arrogance-leading-to-downfall behavior. Melkor did the same type of thing in the begining of the Silmarillion. They certainly were great and wise beings, but from their greatness, became prideful, and desired to be above all others (Achilleus displays similar behavior in the Iliad). Saruman was already becoming "evil" before he looked in the Orthanc-Stone; but since Sauron is a greater maia, he was easily overcome (especially since he didn't realize it was happening). I'm sure there's more...but this is a start. : Lastly, it is said that Bilbo, Frodo and later, supposedly, Samwise and Gimli were all mortals that were allowed to pass over the sea into the west and The Undying Lands. Would the Valar have been happy with this arrangement? And would these mortals have been granted immortality such-like to the Elves upon entering the Undying Lands? I don't know whether you meant this or not, but the elves were already immortal, whether in Aman or Middle Earth. I would like to know the answer to this as well. The same for Tuor...did they all become immortal in Aman (i never thought so, but i could, and often am, wrong). I can see how the ringbearers might live for (at least) a very long time, but what about Tuor? Does "counted among the Noldor" mean he became an elf? .....................
