: And regardless, sucking up to pop culture is not the way to make a good film. Who remembers fleeting trends anyways? Let's forget the Wizard of Oz and Gone With The Wind then. After all, those pop icons of the time aren't remembered at all any more. It was an obvious mistake for MGM to hire Judy Garland. Too well known to play Dorothy, and too old for the part anyway. Not to mention their first choice was that unknown Shirley Temple. And of course Clark Gable should never have been cast as Rhett Butler. After all, who can watch that film without thinking "Clark Gable"? I'm not trying to get your goat, but there is an exception to every rule. Casting is important. But more important is talent and direction. New Line say Liv Tyler can act. I hope they're right. At the very least I hope that Jackson will be able to get the best out of her and the rest of the cast. I also hope that when they have production meetings they remember how seriously many of us take the book and want them to remain true to the spirit, majesty and tone in Tolkien's masterpiece. I don't pretend to know how to make a film, nor do I pretend to be a writer, but like you I fail to understand how a decision to drop Bombadil can be made while at the same time they want to add scenes of Saruman Orc hatchery (or whatever Alien ripoff scene it will be). But since that was another script and there's a new script, I guess I'll just have to wait and hope that they've dumped that idea.
