: Galdor goes on to say "what power still remains lies with us, here in Imladris, or with Cirdan at the Havens, or in Lorien." What power does he speak of, that he deems it is greater than Bombadil's (or perhaps, if not greater, then more appropriate for defying Sauron)? Does Galdor refer to warriors, wisdom, or the collective strengths of the Elves of Imladris, Mithlond, and Lorien? I think that Galdor is refering to the power to actually stand up to Sauron himself. (Galdor's statement is promptly shot down by Elrond). Although Gondor and Rohan, most probably Dale and Erebor too, could field larger armies than Lorien, Imladris, or the Grey Havens, it seems that they could have been defeated just by Sauron's field armies. Tolkien specifically states however that the only way Lorien could have fallen was if Sauron had come there himself. Also throughout the Third Age, even though Sauron and his agents were constantly attacking Gondor either directly or indirectly, they did not attack Lorien, Imladris, or the Grey Havens. I think this power was centered around the individuals that were in charge of these areas, Elrond, Galadriel, and Cirdan, arguably the three most powerful Elves still in Middle-earth at this time. "And northward, beyond the Falls of Rauros and the Gate of Argonath, there were as yet other defences, powers more ancient of which Men knew little, against whom the things of evil did not dare to move, until the ripening of the time of their dark lord, Sauron, should come forth again." Silmarillion (One of my favorite passages.)
