: : I have a slight problem with dragons: what are they? : : All that is said about their creation is that they were bred by : Morgoth in the pits of Utumno. But it is also said that Morgoth : did not have the power to create life, only to corrupt and : disfigure what is already living (ie. orcs and trolls etc.). This : being as it is I dont see how Morgoth could have "created" : dragons. So, is there anything that tells where they came from or : were they always there and Morgoth only managed to turn them to : his evil will?

: Well, this is a streach, but i'm sure there were lizards in : Middle Earth...or snakes, or some kind of reptile. With Morgoth : doing what i'd call the magical version of gene splicing, it : probably wouldn't be too impossible to eventually create dragons : (this feat took Morgoth a very long time to do, remember).

: : Another thing is that Sauron never managed to duplicate this : feat of having dragons at his will, unless the winged beasts that : the Nazgul ride are a smaller version of the cold-drakes.

: I don't know if Sauron ever "created" anything through mutation. : The orcs were Morgoth-made, so were trolls...i think Sauron just : sustained them. The greater dragons were mostly killed off in the : First Age...we all know what happens to Smaug of course. Here's : another idiotic theory of mine...that any leftover dragons did : not take Sauron as their master, being solely loyal to Morgoth, : and became independent, as it were, when he was conquered.

Not so idiotic, or if so, I am an idiot as well, and so are the ICE designers. ;-) Neithan Turambar (and if anyone besides Morgoth- curse him forever, Gurthang shall deal him eternal deat in the end- knows Dragons, it is me) : This is off the topic, but does anyone know if some of Sauron's : power came from "Morgoth worship"? actually, i'm going to write a : separate post on this, so nevermind.
