Let's leave THE HISTORY OF MIDDLE-EARTH out of this, please. I've seen far too many instances of people applying information from the older eras to the LOTR-era and beyond.

Khazad-dum was known to the Elves of Beleriand in the First Age but only as a distant rumor. Their name for it was "Hadhodrond". In the Second Age, as Beleriandic civilization spread eastward among the Nandor of Eriador and the Silvan Elves of the Vales of Anduin, the Sindarin language was used as a common tongue between peoples.

In all likelihood, the name "Moria" was bestowed between the years SA 1 and SA 750, and probably not by the Noldor but more likely by Nandor, Silvan Elves, or possibly some Sindar. Although it was by no means a Black Pit, Khazad-dum, being a mighty Dwarf-city, was not well-loved by all Elves. The confusing tradition of Oropher, for instance, in one version implies strongly he wished to have nothing to do with Dwarves.

I would guess the name "Moria" had simply replaced the older, less-widely used Sindarin name "Hadhodrond" among Elves and Men, and though the Dwarves probably didn't care much for it, they must have not been too insulted by the time the Noldor founded Eregion and became their close friends.
