: : : How do you guys figure Tolkien was lacking for names? Have you ever tried to count all the names used in the book? There are HUNDREDS. Tolkien didn't reuse names because he ran out of ideas for new ones. : : : : eg. Gimli, Gloin's son; Frodo, Drogo's son; Aragorn, Arathorn's : : : : son; Balin, Dwalin's son; Thorin, Thrain's son... etc, etc. : : : : This may have been done by Tolkien so that people did not get : : : : too confused, as in if you see a name you can almost see the : : : : line...can anybody think of other reasons why Tolkien would : : : : have done this? : : : That's a good point, but a lot of these guys ended up with more than one name. : : [snip] : : Got to agree with Michael here. Plenty of names in Tolkien. Don't see what problem is - how many Joes, Petes, Mikes, Freds, Marys, Hughs etc are there in our world. Names get repeated in real life so why not in ME. : : sorry to be terse. very busy : no problem with the names being reused, the question is WHY? I don't think it was for giving ME a more "real" feeling. Perhaps you guys do, but to me it sounds too coplex to be true. : i don't really know anything about the science of logic, but i think there's something called "Ohkham's Razor" or something like that. Or as Z. Freud said: "sometimes a cigar is just a cigar" But a good cigar is a smoke. Arathorn and Aragorn are very different. The prefix "ara" means "royal" and "gorn" means tree. The names aren't any more the same than MacLear and MacLean or reed and read. Don't be misled by prefixes. Tolkien was craftier than that. As for the languages not changing: The Elves were practically immortal, so it isn't surprising that their language changed very little. And the descendants of Numenor lived the equivalent of several normal life spans, so there again the language would be slow to change. I think if you check the meaning of the names you'll find that they are more different than you had thought.
