: That's not true at all. The marriage of Beren and Luthien allowed for the recovery of one of the Silmarils, and ultimately its acquisition by Earendil, the result of the union of Tuor and Idril, who would ultimately sail to Valinor and get the aid of the Valar in destroying Morgoth. Both of those seem like pretty important purposes to me. More important, even, I would hazard, than Aragorn and Arwen. I mean, if Aragorn hadn't married Arwen, would things have been that different? I doubt it. On the other hand, if Beren had never met Luthien (or Tuor Idril), Morgoth would have destroyed the last remnants of the free Elves and Dwarves in Beleriand, and there would have been no Second and Third Ages, or they would have been drastically different Aragorn's primary motivation for reuniting the two kingdoms was so he could marry Arwen. Had he never met her, he might not have had the impetous to spend all that time in the wilderness in hardship and loneliness trying to be worthy of her. In both Beren and Aragorn's case, great deeds were accomplished to achieve a union which would be denied them otherwise. Of course Luthien's father figured Beren would never achieve success, and perhaps die, putting and end to this nonsense. Can we attribute these same feelings to Elrond? I wonder.
