: : : : Are any of you coming to the Oxonmoot coming weekend? Am I likely to meet any of you? : : : I had forgotten all about it! Do you know if there are still spaces as I can easily get up to Oxford from London. I've gone to the Tolkien Society webpage but, bless 'em, they have no contact telephone numbers so if I'm gonna get some info, it looks like your my man. I'll try Exeter College anyway, if I do make it I'll look out for you. : : What is it???? (bear with me, I am an ignorant Dane). : I've copied this information from the Tolkien Society Webpage. : Oxonmoot happens in September, usually on the weekend nearest to Frodo and Bilbo's birthday. The last few years have seen Oxonmoot held in an Oxford College. : The events at Oxonmoot start on Friday evening, with Registration and informal meetings in the bar. Usually a restaurant is arranged for those who wish to book a Friday night dinner in advance, although people arrive at Oxonmoot at all hours and those who know Oxford may choose to eat anywhere in the many good eating places in the town. There is conversation in the Convention bar, and later some people may organise readings and other informal events. : On Saturday there are talks, papers and slide shows on Tolkien-related material. A quiz between local groups (smials) is held, and the Sales Room and Art Show are open most of the day. At lunchtime on Saturday Priscilla Tolkien (JRR Tolkien's Daughter) has, for many years, kindly hosted a buffet reception where attendees can meet her and each other. All other activities are suspended so that everyone can attend. In the evening we hold a party with a bar, and entertainment provided by musically or dramatically inclined members, including a mini-masquerade for costume-wearers. : I'm not sure what it will be like. If I go it will the first time (though I've been promising myself that I will go someday). One meets so few Tolkien people in the flesh, as it were, during the course of regular day to day life, so I'm looking forward to seeing what other fans actually look like! Thank you for a the detailed info. Ever considered hiring Anglo-Saxon/viking reenactors. I myself am a viking reenactor- doing fighting, we can put up some spectacular shows (the Scandinavian groups are generally better than the British ones who seems not to have moved ahead with the rest of us for a while- but, we, the oldest danish group is being overtaken by new swedish, Icelandic, Danish and possibly even some gGerman groups (we will se next year)). BTW, I can mail you a picture of me and my girlfriend at a mrket this year- in kit- then you will know how one very devoted fan looks. >palle_r@get2net.dk< Neithan Turambar
