: : : : : : : : I realize this is a very un-Tolkien kind of question, but who do you suppose is tha baddest guy in Middle-Earth? I mean people, not Valar, balrogs ents, etc

: : : : : Now before everyone says Aragorn, think. Hurin killed 70 something orcs in one battle, Turgon killed Gothmog(fair fight), Fingolfin almost killed Morgoth, and the elves thought Turin Turumbar(Mormegil) couldn't even be killed in battle. Whew. That's my list of contenders. Whattaya think?

: : : : Feänor or Fingolfin for elves, Hurin for Men, with Turin as a close second (it was TROLLS Hurin killed, not Orks), Durin or Azaghal for Dwarves, and Merry for Hobbits. Note that only Hobbits has a representative for the Third Age- the general power level was much higher in the First. : : : : Neithan Turambar

: : : What about Dain? Fought at Nandhurion as a youth, slew Azog and died old but undefeated defending the body of King Brand until the darkness fell. What a star! Eowyn slew a ringwraith (that's my story and I'm sticking to it Shadowfax! :)), did Turgon kill Gothmog? I thought it was Glorfindel (but I don't have the text to hand).

: : Merry's sword did the deed, not Eowyn's. I usually allow the two characters to share in the deed, but for the sake of argument I'm going to say that Eowyn was only a distraction so that Merry could make his move.

: Did you ever get that feeling of deja vu? Have we already discussed this? (under the "who made merry's sword" thread)if we have ... I need to apologise to Shadowfax.

: I don't have the text to hand right now, but good things come to those who wait, or so they say.

Yes, it was discussed, but no one responded to my post and Michael archived them. So I'm starting again. As I recall, it was stated that Merry's sword had no effect on the Nazgul, or words to that effect, and further that normal weapons could harm or kill a ringwraith. I must disagree. If normal weapons could harm or kill the ringwraiths, then why didn't the Elves fill them full of arrows at the ford when Frodo crossed over to Rivendell?
