: Gygax is perhaps best known as the father (co-creator) of Dungeons and Dragons. He is not (as far as I know) regarded as anything of a Tolkien expert by anyone, and why he would be hired by Jackson as a consultant worries me. He did have a grounding in medieval warfare as D&D was originally based on an earlier fantasy wargame (not an actual RPG). Maces and Chainmail, or something like that. : There are too many medievalists on this movie. Middle-earth, for all the love and effort the medievalists devote to their arguments, was not medieval. I can live with some medievalisms, but eventually it just becomes an exercise in futility. : I have reason to fear Jackson may have bought into the medieval Middle-earth hype to such a degree that even our beloved Martin Read would be aghast at what is coming. Let us all hope I am wrong, as I merely stand at the end of a line of whisperers passing small pieces of information to one another. I would be retching in the aisles at the merest hint of a wimple, cod-piece or large expanses of plate armour.
