: : : Well, I don't know if Tolkien changed his mind, but I've read : : that Ingwe was taken as the High King because he was the first : : Elf to awake at Cuivienen, not the first to be born. I don't : : think that the Elves who awoke were any different physically or : : spiritually from normal Elves (except, of course, that they're : : older), but I don't really have any material on the subject - : : just personal opinion. Also, I believe that Tolkien said that ALL : : Elves were reincarnated after spending a certain "purgatorial" : : time in Mandos (if they so chose). : : Where did you read that he was the first to awaken? I believe it : : might say that in the Lost Tales I, but so much changed from then : : that i'm not ready to take that at face value...and Ingwë, Finwë, : : and Elwë were only kings AFTER they went to Aman...i think. : : "..who afterwards were kings.." i think is the quote. Also..the : : same here, just personal opinion. : : --------------------------------- : I think it's from the version in HoME #5. There was a bunch of stuff changed since then (there was some difference in the naming of Olwe and Elwe and the Vanyar were called Lindar), but it was pretty close to the version in Sil. Except that there was a passage that explained that Elwe (Sil. Olwe), Ingwe, and Finwe were taken to Aman as ambassadors so that they could convince the other Elves to go to Valinor. It is also mentioned that Ingwe was the first to awake. : I haven't read all of HoME (only 5, and small parts of 1, 2, 10, 11), so there very well may be more recent passages that conflict with the one I read. I think the only thing that might conflict with it, is the story of the three elf fathers: Imin, Tata, and Enil who were the first to awake according to a tale told to elf-children. That's in the end of War of the Jewels, i think...HOME #11? but that can probably be debated as either fact or simply a story. ----------------
