: But if he had called the bluff he might have given away something. By acting as though he believed Frodo and Sam had been captured, he at least continued to play the deadly game. : : 2. Using his evidence of Frodo's capture as his bargaining : : chips, the M.O.S. is implying that Frodo's mission is of great : : importance that the Captains of the West would not want to : : fail, but what, other than the attempt to destroy the Ring : : could be all so important. What makes Sauron think that the : : presumed holder of the Ring would forego his assault on Mordor : : to gain the release of (to Sauron's thinking) an expendable : : pawn. : It may have been a ploy intended to glean some information concerning the Hobbits' purpose. After all, we know (in retrospect, at least) that Sauron never recaptured Frodo, so he had to be wondering what the Hobbit was up to. I don't think we're expected to believe Sauron would seriously expect the Lords of the West to give up and go home if he agreed to release a Hobbit -- not when he had more than enough soldiers waiting to crush the small army. : I think it was just an attempt get the Lords of the West to betray some clue to the real purpose of the Hobbit's mission, but they don't seem to have done that. I agree one hundred percent to both statements. NT
