: : : I have managed to get a copy of the letter. It does state that : : : hobbit have "slightly pointed AND elvish ears."

: : : The big word for me here is "and". If Tolkien wanted to say : : : that elves have pointed ears it would have been better to say : : : some thing like "hobbits have slightly pointed ears LIKE elves" : : : OR "hobbits have elvish ears which are slightly pointed"

: : : The use of the word "and" implies that hobbits' ears are : : : slighly pointed AND some other characteristic which is similar : : : to to that of elvish ears.

: : The point, however, is that Tolkien was NOT speaking of HIS Elves. He was speaking of the Elves of European folklore, popularly conceived of as having pointed ears. HIS Elves would provide no frame of reference for the people at Houghton Mifflin. I doubt they had even heard of THE SILMARILLION in 1938, let alone read it or the accompanying materials.

: I believe it a question of interpretation, I think elven ears are not pointed, or at least pointed so little that only close examination will point it out:-). : However, I also base this on the question; "what good would it do? would it enhance elven hearing? (is it not sight that elves are famous for?)" I think it would not, True many animalt with pointed ears have better hearing abilities than Humans but I think (I am no biologist) that it is more a question of the inner ear than the outer- BTW elves would look silly with dog's ears and I discard that notion of pointed ears too. The point of this is to pointedly point out that there would be no advantage to having them any other shape then they are and thus they are, to mee, not pointed. : NT

...and that's the point!! :)
