: : : Taking a break from heavier matters... ;)

: : : What do y'all think of a hobbit movie as a prequel to LOTR. We all know the tones of each are completely different, the Hobbit being geared towards a younger crowd. So...

: : I would have liked to see the Hobbit movie come out seperately, but before the LOTR movies...to kinda get people anticipating...since that isn't going to happen...

: : : Should the Hobbit movie go off on its own? Creating a whole new paradigm, a whole new feel, in effect a whole new world that is only peripherally related to that of the LOTR trilogy of movies?

: : Yes, 1 vote for the above ;^)

: I think it would work as prequel without creating a new feel. : The Hobbit is by no means a light weight story, there is serious business afoot. I have never thought of The Hobbit as a "children's" story. Most of us remember the Rankin & Bass version of the Hobbit. Now that was a children's story. In my opinion it did not capture the darker serious side of the story.

: Hitchcock once said "show the audience the bomb under the chair". As a prequel, the audience would know the true nature of Bilbo's magic ring. The audience's knowledge of the ring and a serious tone to the film would make it compatible.~Aelmer

: : : Or should it be "tweaked" (with some parts being outright dumped) to make it more compatible?

: There is no reason to "dump" any parts, in my opinon. I'm certain that a script could be written to cover the story in 130 to 145 minutes. Who says a film has to be 120 minutes? In fact, I think the LOTR films will fall into the 130 to 145 time span. : ~Aelmer

: : : Me? I see both points, but I tend to think it should be made a bit more "compatible." But I'm not sure. (Hence this poll.)

Just a thought. If The Hobbit were done next, you could have a brief scene in Rivendell where Bilbo meets a non-descript youngster that will one day be the king of Gondor & Arnor. Aragorn was living there as a kid.
