I'm a little surprised at how this thread has gone on and on. The answer isn't much different than the WWII thread, so everyone repeat: THE LOTR IS NOT AN ALLEGORY, THE LOTR IS NOT AN ALLEGORY. Now anyone who is a bad boy and starts doing these one on one correlations again will have to write this upon the board 100 times... er... sorry, I've been teaching eight year olds way, way too long. :-)

LOTR takes place in prehistoric times that supposedly become historic through the discovery of the Red Book. It cannot possibly be an allegory for any later historical events. However, Tolkein WOULD have placed it in the Universe as he perceived it, which is the Catholic view of the Universe. Therefore some of the backstory, especially prior to creation, would have to match. This is why you essentially see God, angels, etc., etc., etc. But even this is NOT what makes his book Catholic.

It is the VALUES as presented strongly through myth. They are Catholic assumptions about the nature of the universe, of mankind, of nature, of the sacred and the profane, of sin and salvation and redemption. Even in prehistoric fiction, because these values would still be assumed, the LOTR is simply riddled with them. It is a work of FICTION that is riddled with Catholic worldview from beginning to end.

Okay, can I go back to grading these spelling tests now? Hmmmm... this kid has improved. At the beginning of the year, he couldn't even spell his profanities correctly. Oh no, sheesh, I can't believe she spelled "come" c... oh never mind. I am not losing my mind. I am not losing my mind. I am nno
