: : (snip)

: IMHO, I don't think Radagast had anything to do with Beorn beisdes them maybe being friends/aquaintences.

: Ithink, because The Hobbit was written as a childrens story, Tolkien has alot more freedom towrite things that don't have answers. For example, he used goblins instead of orcs in The Hobbit and nobody questions that, so I don't think that Beorn is something to get too worried about...he's a man who can change into a bear (a werebear??)

: Another thing just crossed my mind as I was typing...do you think that everybody would be so hung up about Bombadil if he was in The Hobbit and not The Lord of the Rings???

i imagine he would provoke at least *some* discussion -- after all, we're pretty hung up on beorn right now ;) thing is, the attributes of bombadil that provoke so much discussion couldn't really occur in the hobbit (discussion of bombadil and the ring, his power or lack thereof against the dark lord, etc), since the story doesn't really go there. i understand what you mean, though -- the tone of the hobbit is much more fantastical, faery-story-like, and that probably allows for a little more leeway with explanations.
