: : : : : Dragons are the strongest (I guess), but Balrogs are Maiar, but Saruman (a Maiar) feared the Nazgul : Firstly, everyone seems to agree that the Nazgul are less powerful than the other two. The Witch-King is, perhaps, an exception because of his human life as a sorcerer. But that just helps makes my point: : As with most of Tolkein's creatures, there were a few "outstanding" members of each race. : The greatest of the dragons, Ancalagon, was finally brought down by Earendil, who had a silmaril, yet Smaug was killed with a single well-placed arrow. Another dragon was killed by a King (or Prince?) of the Rohir (was it Frea? Freca? Freda?), the horsemen living between the Misty Mountains and Greenwood (causing the long-lasting tension between the dwarves and the Rohirrim because the Rohir then plundered the dwarven horde). : Gothmog, the Captain of the Balrogs, was killed by Ecthelion, an Eldar Captain of Gondolin. Does anyone reading this think that this Rohir Lord could defeat a Balrog as easily as he killed a Dragon? If not, then it would imply that at least SOME Balrogs were stronger than SOME Dragons. : Anyway, the Dragons obviously varied greatly in strength - I would guess that because there were fewer of them, the Balrogs varied less. : >>POSTED FOR THE ATTENTION OF ECTHELION<< : You wrote: "apparently Glorfindel was one tough cookie, having taken down a balrog and chasing the Nazgul" : My reply: I don't think that it was the same Glorfindel which rode against the Witch-King at Fornost as killed the Balrog in Gondolin. I understood that the Gondolin Glorfindel was "the Golden", and fell off a cliff with the Balrog anyway, whereas the Fornost/Imladris Glorfindel was "the Fair". : I haven't seen any record of an Elf killing a Balrog without being killed. I could be wrong - if so, let me know. :::Yes, I am aware of the confusion, but they are the same. All Elves are reincarnated (except Feanor, if I am correct, but you get the point). Glorfindel came back to Mid
