I have not yet finished the book, but I'm making progress. I have to say, however, that I find Pat Murphy's handling of the Hobbit tradition to be quite remarkable. I am consciously trying to identify Hobbit sources and am unable to do so until each episode is completed. Other people may be able to look at the various encounters and, based on the chronology of events in THE HOBBIT, deduce, "Well, this must be...." But the book is not really written that way.

For example (and I am not providing any spoilers here), I was looking for direct parallels to the troll encounter. There are none, really. And yet, when the whole episode is finished, it's clear to anyone who is familiar with THE HOBBIT that the episode was indeed based on the troll encounter.

I said the Clone characters were filling the role of the Dwarves, too. Well, that's definitely the case but it is only the role they fill. These characters are their own (or Murphy's own) characters. They aren't metaphors for Thorin and Company even though they are (collectively) a metaphor for Thorin and Company.

Gitana comes and goes in a very Gandalf-like fashion, but she doesn't appear to be superhuman like Gandalf (who is extraordinary even in the original HOBBIT). She has a Gandalf-like quality in dealing with the Clone, but she's not a female Gandalf. It's hard to explain. You can SEE the HOBBIT is there, and yet, it's not really there. It's like reading two stories at the same time. I can't think of anything else like this. Certainly not THE SWORD OF SHANARRA. I hope that, as more people read this book, they don't compare Murphy's work to Brooks'. There is a world of difference between the two writers.
