: I did see it in a British (Penguin or something) book I found in a foreign language bookstore in Tallinn, Estonia of all places. Don't recall why I didn't pick it up. Is it available in any form in the USA? Amazon say that Beowulf the monsters and the critics is out of print but: The following titles are available from the Tolkien Society. Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics_ 1971 reprint of this important essay, in paper covers. 55 pages. ( ) Published by the British Academy £6.99 £8.25 £9.75 _The Monsters and The Critics and Other Essays_ by J.R.R.Tolkien This edition includes the pivotal essay "On Fairy Stories" published by HarperCollins ( ) Paperback £9.99 £11.05 £12.50 : Other news: All of this started at age 10 or so. I found a slim book at the Palo Alto Children's Library called _Adventures with the Giants_, all about Thor and Loki and Odin and was hooked. That year 5th grade teacher assigned _The Hobbit_ and I recognized the same "air" at once. I only mention this because I found a copy of this very important book, for my life at least, in a neighboring town's library. It is _Adventures with the Giants_ by Catherine Sellew, Little and Brown, 1950. Cool illustrations. Same author did books on the Volsungs and the Olympians.
