After reading all the post on why glorfindel wasn't sent and the hobbits were etc etc. I think it has something to do with this idea, that tolkien wanted to show, in the doing of the greatest deeds, which are beyond the strength of any person, what really matters is not an individuals inherent strength but wether that individual is chosen, in this case by illuvatar I believe, and that individual's own conviction to get the job done. that is a theme all through the books I think, often times the weak are able to do what the strong cannot, if they are willing to be used and do not shrink from the task put in front of them. but thats just my two cents
