But the gaming people are not generally interested in guesses or in estimates pulled out of careful study of what Tolkien wrote. Instead, they are interested (often) in wholesale fabrication (invention) of their own. That's fine in and of itself (after all, we can't forget that Tolkien's world is fictional), but when gaming stuff is presented as a source or "final word" on something, and we are expected to analyze the non-canonical stuff, that's what I don't like.

If we accept gaming sources, we might as well quote passages from "Isildur" when analyzing the War of the Last Alliance.

It also seems to me that there exists a small minority of people out there that cannot make this distinction, and who will quote at length from these sources as if they were legitimate and consistent sources of Middle Earth information.

I think this last point troubles me, not the mere existence of non-canonical information.
