: : : All of the elements of myth exist within LOTR. We know Tolkien stated he wanted to create a myth. Without getting into a discussion of how or for whom Tolkien created his myth, how would you rate LOTR as Myth?

: : Easy - it isn't. LotR is a great story, but not a myth. If you want a myth, The Silmarillion is definitely one (especially the first chapters): it explains the world through God-Wars, has many long tales of valor and love, and is a kind of an invented history. Compare it to any other Mythologies , and I think you will find everything is in there. (I DEFINITLY don't see myself as an expert on mythologies and suchlike, so if I'm wrong, don't be too cruel, OK?)

: Yes, the Sil is a creation myth and others. However, I think LOTR is also a myth in the classical sense. You have the hero, or in this case heros, the older wiser mentor, the quest, the tests of hero's courage and wisdom, and in the the end the hero returns as more than he began. My opiion, anyway.

sorry, a misunderstanding of the term "myth" (especially as compared to "mythology"). what is the definition for "Myth"?
