: : He didnt mention the battlefields of dale which were major in the victory at pellanor for if dale had of been lost the easterlings would have swept south.

: I know. I missed that too. And Erebor and Dol Goldur. True, but why should he? Dale, Erebor, Dol Guldur were secondary fronts. Certainly of interest, but not the main arena. The article reminded me of tour brochures I've seen for battlefields on World War I's Western Front. I found it quite moving.

As for the Easterlings sweeping south, well, it was quite a long way from Dale or even Rhun to Rohan/Gondor, and a formidable desert and the Anduin were in the way. Had the Easterlings won up north (the battles occurred simultaneously with Pelennor/Morannon), they'd have to regroup, resupply (even with looted goods from Dale/Erebor not a simple matter). They'd arrive down south by June or July at the earliest, in time to spoil Aragorn's wedding (talk about unwelcome guests). But why would they bother: their main ally/sponsor/behind the scenes master had bitten the dust, the West was triumphant. An Easterling victory up north would be problematic at best: it'd cast a pall over the victory celebrations: Gimli and Legolas would be rather pissed, and bending Aragorn's ear about mounting a punitive expedition. I'd think a victorious Easterling "khan" would, at best, be trying to placate the West as best he could. as soon as the news of Sauron's fall reached him, stop all looting, raping and murdering, be very generous with returning (stolen dwarvish) treasure to the survivors, looking for the best strongholds or lines of retreat. This khan would have no clue as to how Sauron had been brought down, how close a thing it had been, and would be very impressed by the apparent power of this new King, and very, very scared.
