And can wizards also make slips of the tongue? Either Gandalf, speaking for Sauron, or else Sauron himself, had a false belief about the ring. I've yet to hear any proof that would suggest that the more likely option isn't that the misreading in this case was Gandalf's. And this is not, after all, a small detail. Think about what we're talking about here: the One ring. The entire history of the second and third ages of the world are bound up with this ring. It's the name of the book. And loooong before the war of the rings we're told that all of Sauron's mind was directed toward recovering the ring. Doesn't sound like someone who let the possibility of his greatest treasure still existing slip his mind (over the course of 3000 years...you've got plenty of time to remember things you've forgotten in 3000 years).
