Fangorn himself says that elves are mostly concerned about themselves: how often would the bring up their 2-3 thousand year old songs about strange beings they never understood all that well and whom they don't see much anymore?

Well, I don't know about that. But he clearly loved ancient lore, and that has to come from somewhere. And in any case, in the text it seems that he had _never_ heard about ents except from Rohan. It wasn't just a matter of not having followed up to figure out what "ents" were.
