Gandalf knew that he had to bring the dwarves to meet Beorn slowly, or Beorn (being somewhat eccentric and highly reclusive) would have thrown them all out on their ears. In order for the quest to succeed at this point they needed Beorn's aid, thus Gandalf does lie, or misrepresents the size of quest until he has brought them all to meet Beorn. -RobRoy
