: Sauron had no problem carrying the Ring while he was disembodied. Remember, the Valar shaped the universe. They could hardly have done that while embodied. The Ainur had powers over "nature" that Men and Elves didn't possess. But of course the reason to avoid explanations like this as much as possible is that they threaten to enormously complicate other parts of the story. That's really one of the nice things, to my mind, about Tolkien's fantasy world -- that "magic" in the standard sense is kept to a minimum. Still, I think you must be right. That Tolkien said in a letter that Sauron's spirit would have born the ring back should be sufficient (unless he said something else to specifically contradict this, which I guess he didn't). And I suppose that the ringwraiths are immaterial yet can hold swords, etc. (that wouldn't be quite the same as the sort of spirit we're talking about with Sauron, but close I guess). I have to say, I'm still a little uncomfortable with the idea that Sauron's spirit did this after the fall of Numenor. Shouldn't his body and the ring have both ended up at the bottom of the ocean -- and not necessarily in the same place? But we all have to live with a little discomfort sometimes.
