: Have you ever seen a Peter Jackson movie? By saying that none of the great directors ever tackling the job, you are implying that Peter Jackson is a two bit, low budget director, from some little hick town in a tiny island off the coast of Australia. : In his career, Peter Jackson has created several masterpieces, with very, very tight budgets. The Frighteners was a brilliant movie, directed by him, and filmed here in New Zealand, on a tiny (by hollywood standards) budget. Heavenly Creatures, in which Kate Winslet made her movie debut, was oscar nominated I believe, several times over. Earlier in his career, peter Jackson made movies such as "Meet the Feebles", and "Bad Taste" (neither of which, I am SURE, you have ever seen). These movies were made with budgets below NZ$200!

: Gandalf

PJ may be brilliant, but the one movie of his I've seen, "The Frighteners," was (no offense) no "masterpiece." It was fine for what it was.

That doesn't mean PJ's LotR won't be great. This will be his real test -- to see what he does with an awesome cast, huge budget and great material. Francis Ford Coppola wasn't born with "The Godfather" on his resume, at a certain point in his career he had to go our and direct his masterpiece. Now it's PJ's turn. Let's see what he does. I'm hopeful and very excited. Go PJ!!
