: : I just read that Tom Bombadil isn't going to be in the movie! What the hell were they thinking? Oh, the agony. Why can't they do me a favor and make the movie 100% realistic to the books? The agony, agony, pain and suffering.

: I believe they did it to save time. I heard PJ wants to make an expanded version of the film for release on DVD with the scenes he had to leave out.

Greetings and welcome to our humble board.

Just as a matter of course, if PJ and New Line were to shoot the film "100% realistic to the books" then they would turn out some twenty hours in length and the only people who would go see them would be Tolkien newsgroup board members and the random fanatics who haven't been able to access the internet yet. Sorry, but that's the cold hard facts. Even the very excellent BBC radio adapaptation was 13 hours long and they cut a lot of descriptive text and some scenes (including Tom Bombadil)for dialogue. Unfortunately, the things that Tom adds to the book (helpless hobbits who will later trasform into worldly wanderers) can be shown in other places more easily without the digression or loss of action that dear old Tom will take up. Thus, most adapations drop Tom altogether, and this latest one will be the same.

Just keep in mind that PJ is creating an interpretation of Tolkien's work, as no one but Tolkien could actually give proper justice to the work.
