: : Cleopatra was Greek : She was as much a Greek as I am a Spaniard. Her family came from Greek (or Macedonia -- I'm not sure of where Ptolemy came from). But she herself was born in Egypt and raised according to the traditions the Ptolemys had established based upon the Pharoanic traditions. Ptolemy Lagus (later Ptolemy Soter)was a Macedonian general under Alexander the Great. Moreover there was considerable evidence that he was Alexander's older illigitimate half-brother. It being an apparently well-known fact that Alexander's father had an affair with Ptolemy's mother shortly before his birth (he had her married off sharpish to Lagus - a relatively humble man who would not raise objections). As regards nationality, at this time no clear pronouncements can really be made. Ptolemaic Egypt had three distinct communities, native Egyptian, Greek and Jewish. There was some blurring of the boundaries, though sporadic mob violence between the three continued into Roman times. No doubt Cleopatara would have played to the "Gallery of the Natives" as Egyptian tradition held women in higher esteem than the Greek. Egyptian history had a number of powerful women figures, in the shape of such important posts as "the God's Wife of Amun at Thebes" and of course many Queen-Regents and the celebrated Female Pharaoh Hatshepsut.
