: I was just about to fire off a response stating that the MOS : did indeed extend his life w/ his sorceries. While I didn't : think he was from the SA I was cock sure the text did say he : was able to extend his life to some degree. Then I looked it : up and lo and behold it mentions absolutely NO WHERE that he : extended his life. In fact there's no reference to anything : like that at all. Amazing how the mind, ageing ever faster, : plays tricks on you. Don't doubt yourself just yet. I believe that the usually very reliable Robert Foster may be responsible for this misunderstanding. MOUTH OF SAURON (SA ? -TA 3019) Black Numenorean. In the Third Age (and perhaps in the Second as well) he served Sauron, rising in his service because of his cunning and evil. He became a great sorceror, which is how he preserved his life for thousands of years. By the time of the WR he had become the Lieutenant of the Tower of Barad-dur, and had forgotten his real name. He was doubtless killed when Sauron fell, or in the battle with the Army of the West which followed. He only gives one reference for the Mouth, which is the section in THE RETURN OF THE KING everyone is familiar with. Even J.E.A. Tyler wasn't quite as strenuous in suggesting the Mouth came from the Second Age. IIRC, David Day may be another of these "Second Agers".
