I see your point, but Maedhros was also obviously being diplomatic at a time when the Noldor needed to heal the divisions among them. He was, technically, Feanor's heir and successor, and what he did was abdicate in favor of Fingolfin. That's not the same thing as the kingship passing to Fingolfin from Feanor.
