: : In speaking to the masses (those I hang out with anyway) I have come to this conclusion. No one will ever make a movie that holds true to the spirit of Tolkien as though of us posting here see it, and I'll tell you why: The majority of people wouldn't accept it. : : Think about it, even though LOTR has worldwide popularity and probably a significant fan base, how many people on the street really know anything of ME even if they've glanced through the book once or twice? Let's face it guys (and girls) it takes a special person to really appreciate ME. Some people are too shallow, others don't have the concentration required to read a triliogy anymore, and others scoff at any work of fantasy. We are a select group, may as well get used to it....

: You're probably correct. I was delving deep into Tolkien and ME during the late 70's and early 80's, but it was marriage, job, kids and a lack of time to devote that made my copies sit on the bookself untouched untill recently. : As I said in another post, only one of my friends who have read LOTR shows any real interest in the films. The others have a "that's nice" attitude. : A positive thing that could come from the films is to awaken or re-awaken interest in ME among those people on the street. I certainly hope this happens.

True, but if I see "Frodo Lives!" anywhere, I am moving to Antarctica.
