: : I firmly agree with your point. It takes a hardcore fantacy literature fan to read, accept, and understand Tolkein's work.

: While I agree w/ you guys, the funny thing about me is that I can't stand fantasy novels. Now I haven't had much exposure to them, : I have read a couple other ones and really didn't like them. Tolkien seems to have written a story that gives these fantasy characters, creatures and storyline a respect and believability that the other books don't seem to be able to do. His view seems to harken back to a time when these things were actually believed and treated w/ dignity.

Oh yes! I agree with you completely. I simply can't stand most works of Fantasy. I am okai with Raymond E. Feist, and I love Terry Pratchett (although me falls under humour). Apart from that, I really can't stand the whole "barbarian in loincloth, semiclad nubile nymph(o), fate of nations/world/universe, quest for magical/enchanted/haunted sword/ring/amulet/staff/hat/latrine (just tick applicable box)"

Okai, I have had thise bitter argument with my friends, and they disagree, but I think that most works of fantasy are just too overdone. It's reeking of too many "fantasy" elements, and has no viable plot, and no depth to the characters.

I would go as far as to say that I HATE fantasy, but I am a die hard Tolkien fan, all the way!

=)
