: : I can tell you from fact that I have seen with my own eyes two : : such action figures, a dwarf (whether it is Gimli or not, I : : don't know) and a Lord of the Nazgul. So action figures are : : going to be forthcoming. However, I have not heard of any mad : : rushes for the local Toys R Us as there were with Star Wars : : TPM. I would wager that, once again, we are projecting our own : : love of Tolkien onto the masses.

: Oh, I know about the Toy Vault action figures. I have them all. I write background essays for Toy Vault's Web site (and I finally got onto the packaging with the Lord of the Nazgul). They did have an arrangement with Toys'R'Us, too, although most of the product is sold through specialty stores or over the Web.

: But the action figures I was referring to were the little ones you find in fast food chain promotions.

: It remains to be seen whether there will be a mass production of large action figures for the major toy chains (but I suspect people are looking into it).

Had a look at the site, Ugluk was reasonable as was W.King, but the Balrog! The "Demon of Might" just looked grotesque, a "troll" with wings - no sense of grandeur. I have always imagined a Balrog to resemble "the mountain which becomes a demon " in Disney's Fantasia. Frightful but of aesthetically pleasing proportions - like a humanoid tiger writ large. Why all the knobs and lumpen ugliness?
