: Some of the films you mention must be Fantasy by accident. : Certainly the producers of Errol Flynn's Robin Hood were : labouring under the misapprehension that they had done a good : deal of historical research for it.

Oh, as a period peace, "Robin Hood" looks great. But since the storyline itself is really not based on history, I would regard it as a fantasy movie. Heck, it's just a GREAT movie. I'd be tempted to throw it in with a science fiction list! :)

: What about the viking film (The Vikings?) with Kirk Douglas and : Tony Curtis? Certainly a large dollop of fantasy in that one - : and a good adventure film.

Good adventure film, but it has some dumb stuff in it (I don't like the scene where Tony Curtis calls upon Odin to save him -- there's nothing really fantastic in that). And it looks "cheap". Maybe that's due to film degradation. I don't know if it's been restored, but every time I've watched it, the thing looked like it was red almost all the way through. Reminds me too much of the Italian barbarian movies from the 1960s.

: Also Time Bandits, comic-fantasy - aimed at children but : entertaining.

But not of the same quality as the movies I listed. The story is slow in some places, there is some bad acting along with the good, it looks goofy in a couple of places. It's an uneven film, although it's considered a classic by modern audiences.

And I think it would look dated today (I haven't watched it in years -- it interested me that little). A good movie will look fresh even 50 or 60 years after it was first released.

: I guess El Cid and The Warlord might squeeze in as well.

"El Cid"! That's a GREAT movie. But it's more of a historical film than anything else. I would have to exclude it from my list, no matter how many liberties it took with known facts.
