: : Those of us familiar with the Dr. Who television series know about the Sonic Screwdriver and K-9. Just when things looked darkest with no way of escape for the good doctor, the Sonic Screwdriver would be used or K-9 would come to the rescue.

: : Tolkien had his own Sonic Screwdriver and K-9. The Eagles. Just like the screwdriver and robo-dog, they came to the rescue of heros in a tight spot with no way out. Beren and Luthien, Gandalf and Thorin & Co. surrounded by wolves and goblins, and Frodo & Sam on Mount Doom.

: : The big question: : : Did Tolkien plan to have the eagles perform the rescues, or did he write himself into a corner and the eagles were the only way out? : : Your opinions?

: Umm, Tolkien has the reputation for thinking his way through something before actually writing/doing it. Thus I think he had planned the Eagles to rescue them... Besides, this method allowed him to continue to the last moments of action (when you are sure he's going to die) then suddenly an escape. There is more suspense this way. : The Eagles were not only involved in rescue missions, they also helped in battle (very rarely). Of course this is but my opinnion. LOTR is (and I say for the umpteenth time) one of the richest story lines of all time, and JRRT spent all of his life on them (well, most of); with how much time he spent on them, they had to be clearly thought through... If you look at the time spent to make am episode of 'Sonic Screwdriver and K-9' it simply doesn't match up. No offence meant in assailing your post, I am very ready to stand for Tolkien to the end. : Maedhros

The literary device is known as "Deus ex machina." It dates from Greek theater whereas a protagonist would find himself in an insoluble dilemma. A chair would descend from the scaffolding and lift our hero from harm's way. It was intended to illustrate the hand of God protecting the hero. The Eagles were closely associated with Manwe. Through their actions, Manwe could indirectly give assistance in limited situations.
