: And therefore to go back to an earlier point, the two are difficult to comapre - a God about whom everything is known against a God about whom nothing is known..... : : Don Q

: Ok, I am confused. Which God are you saying that we know everything and which that we know nothing? From the Christian perspective we know a great deal about God, and the same for Eru. And on that score, if we go with the definitions that were offered earlier in this debate for good and evil, then there God and Eru both have a "side". Albeit, their side, but that is still a side, and it defined the alternative. If God is good, and good is what God wants us to do, then the alternate is evil, that which God does not want us to do. I grant that what "God wants us to do" is colored by our definition of God, and our belief in God. But again, if we are tying this back to Tolkien and Christianity, then we know a great deal about God, and what God wants us to do.

I think in relation to the Christian God, you are confusing fact and scripture, we actually know nothing about any God in our Universe other than what other human beings have written purporting to be the truth. It is not possible to even clarify the existence of God (Christian or otherwise) and therefore impossible to know that alleged God's motives, powers, nature or anything else. All there is to go on is faith, and that is individual, anything else is organised religion which is potentially a tool for social control and in many ways run for and by human beings who are of course not God or Godlike in any way. Eru - we know what Tolkein has written about him and therefore what powers, motives and nature he has, but of course Tolkein as the Author stands evven higher in the Unicverse than Eru - who's existence is down to Tolkein abot whom we know a VERY great deal. Although here I would branch off into a discussion about Jostein Gaarder and the independant reality of fictional creations in the subconcious which I fear would only cloud the issue.... Don Q
